The US-based space development company, Orbital Assembly Corporation, announced Tuesday their plans for two space stations with tourist accommodations.

According to CNN, OAC planned to launch two space stations with tourist accommodations scheduled to be operational in 2025 and 2027, respectively.

“Orbital Assembly is now aiming to launch not one but two space stations with tourist accommodation: Voyager Station, the renamed original design, is now scheduled to accommodate 400 people and to open in 2027, while new concept Pioneer Station, housing 28 people, could be operational in just three years.”

Pioneer-class Station, projected to be completed by 2025, feeds forward from Gravity Ring, with the capability to accommodate up to 56 passengers and crew on four to eight habitation modules. This microgravity space station, intended to be used for commercial operations, is designed for intermittent artificial gravity operation, providing the opportunity for long term habatation. The Pioneer-class Station is designed to generate revenue in the following areas: tourism, manufacturing, research, leasing and hosted payloads. OAC anticipates the station will be cash flow positive in its first year of operation, and that its revenue will significantly reduce debt by 2026 so that OAC will be in a good position to fund future construction with minimal equity or debt financing.

Voyager-class Space Stations are OAC’s flagship product, expected to be ready in 2027. They are designed to accommodate more than 300 passengers and crew, including tourists, business travelers, astronauts, scientists, and other groups interested in working and living in space. Designed to offer continuous, near lunar operational artificial gravity, which is similar to the gravitational pull of the moon, as well as microgravity and near continuous sunlight, which will provide ample electrical power. For tourists, we believe we can provide hotel amenities that will include: “space-ous” accommodations; stunning views of the Earth, Moon, and stars; restaurant-quality food and beverages; events; functional toilets and showers; exercise facilities; medical triage services; and emergency evacuation capabilities. We’re not camping in space any more.

OAC company planned to offer the following services in their space station:

  • Long Duration Missions,
  • Space Tourism,
  • Astronaut crew training facilities,
  • Manufacturing,
  • Leasable space,
  • Research and development,
  • Media and film production,
  • Branding and sponsorship opportunities.

Vacationing in space could become a reality in just three years.

“For the average person, being in space will be a sci-fi dream experience,” says Tim Alatorre, Chief Operating Officer for Orbital Assembly Corp (OAC), said in a press release.

“Our vision is to make space a destination people will yearn to visit, with familiar elements provided by the presence of gravity,” he added.

OAC is creating the world’s first hybrid space stations for both work and play.

They will feature artificial gravity which will allow guests to move around as they normally would, rather than in a weightless environment. The technology is not currently available on space stations, according to the release.

Despite the ongoing conversation about the ethics of space travel, as private companies like billionaire Virgin founder Richard Branson’s Virgin Galactic and Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin both offer commercial space travel, and civilians — including celebrities like Michael Strahan and William Shatner — launch past the Kármán line, Alatorre says, “We envision our Pioneer and Voyager space stations as the ultimate ecotourism destinations.”

“Once people get to space, it will change their perspective about Earth,” he continued. “Space travel is still in its infancy, and we’re excited to do our part to push it forward to help improve life on earth.”
